Problem
Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is recognized as a summer destination with beaches, clam chowder, and lighthouses. Tourists and even residents fail to look beyond these aspects and recognize the history and culture in the area. By learning about attractions that are off the beaten path, tourists can have a more meaningful and unique experience, and residents are encouraged to travel to new places outside their hometown.
Design Solution
On the Cape reels prospective readers in with recognizable symbolism of mainstream Cape Cod before the secret locations are revealed. The photography initially features admirable vacation snapshots and peaceful seaside scenes. Once hooked, readers are encouraged to learn about the secret places and experience Cape Cod in a new light. On the Cape is meant to be used actively as a travel guide, with the reader carrying this publication with them as they travel. I explored many of these places in person with my mother on her research trips, and this short publication is a tribute to her work.

Behind the Scenes

Color System
For the cover of On the Cape, the image was created through Photoshop, using an original photo taken from visiting the Nauset Beach Lighthouse. This is an inactive lighthouse on the national seashore, recognizable as the logo for Cape Cod potato chips. The process of designing the cover is shown below.
